Before 2020, Belarus’s civil society appeared weak and marginalized, but a series of events that year led to the emergence of formal civil society organizations (CSOs) and new social movements. Despite significant repression, these activists have persisted in their efforts both inside and outside Belarus, challenging the authoritarian regime.
This project delves into the unexpected rise of CSOs and social movements in a previously apolitical landscape and explores their impact on political developments in Belarus and other authoritarian regimes. Dr. Tatsiana Chulitskaya, from Vilnius University and Manchester Metropolitan University, will share insights from the project’s research, including interviews conducted in Lithuania, Georgia, and Poland.
Don’t miss this opportunity to gain a deeper understanding of Belarusian civil society and the implications of this project’s findings. The project is supported by the Leverhulme Trust Research Projects Grant scheme.
