“Who controls the past controls the future. Who controls the present controls the past”.<\/i>\u00a0<\/i>\u00a0<\/i>\u00a0<\/i><\/p>\n

George Orwell\u2019s dystopian vision has only gained in relevance since 1984 was published in 1949. With the spread of digital communications technologies, states and individuals are increasingly able to manipulate the population with tendentious narratives of the past.<\/p>\n

But the aim of shaping the future through representations of the past need not be nefarious. The German Institute for the History of the National Socialist Era was mandated in 1949 to document, analyse and educate the public about Nazism and its crimes, so they would never be repeated. Based on the German model, institutes of contemporary history spread rapidly, helping to consolidate the postwar democracies of Western Europe.<\/p>\n

Established with the aim of consolidating democratic development and European integration, the “memory institutions” of East Central Europe have sometimes been associated with the politicization of historical research, non-inclusive approaches to commemoration, and outdated methods and practices of research. Meanwhile the House of European History was established to implement the idea of European remembrance.<\/p>\n

The conference “The Past and Future of Public History” invites participants to consider the establishment of institutes of “contemporary history” after the Second World War, “national memory” after the Cold War and “European Remembrance” after the eastward expansion of the EU as three waves of public history activism, and to consider what the next wave might entail.<\/p>\n

Approaches to public history have varied considerably over time and across space, but they are joined by the key concerns of communicating the past while encouraging the participation and engagement of various constituencies.<\/p>\n

The conference, which will take place on the\u00a09th-10th of October 2025,\u00a0<\/b>will be held at the\u00a0Institute of International Relations and Political Science of Vilnius University.\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n

We invite you to submit proposals for both individual papers and panels.\u00a0Please submit your abstract (up to 250 words) along with a short bio by completing this survey<\/a> <\/strong>by the 11th of April 2025<\/strong>. Selected presenters will be notified on the\u00a019th of May 2025<\/strong>.<\/b>\u00a0We strongly encourage on-site participation, but online participation will be possible in individual cases. In the survey, please indicate your preferred mode of participation. The conference language is English. \"\"<\/strong>Jan <\/span>Kubik<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/span>\u202fis Distinguished Professor in the Department of Political Science at Rutgers University and Professor Emeritus at the School of Slavonic and East European Studies, University College London (UCL), which he directed in 2015-17. The 2020 President of Association for East European and Eurasian Studies and the recipient of the 2018 Distinguished Achievement Award from the Polish Institute of Arts and Sciences in America (PIASA). Co-Principal Investigator (with Richard Mole) of two international projects, Delayed Transformational Fatigue in Central and Eastern Europe (<\/span><\/span>FATIGUE<\/span><\/span><\/a>) and Populist Rebellion Against Modernity in 21st-century Eastern Europe (<\/span><\/span>POPREBEL<\/span><\/span><\/a>). His work deals with the rise of right-wing populism; culture and politics; memory politics; civil society, protest politics and social movements; communist and post-communist politics; and interpretive\/ethnographic methods in political science. Social Justice, Mobilization, and Hegemony<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a>\u202f(edited with Amy <\/span>Linch<\/span>); and\u202f<\/span><\/span>Twenty Years After Communism: The Politics of Memory and Commemoration<\/span><\/span><\/a>\u202f(with Michael Bernhard). He is currently working on several publications based on the FATIGUE and POPREBEL projects. He received an M.A. (sociology and philosophy) from the Jagiellonian University in Krak\u00f3w, Poland and Ph.D. (anthropology, with distinction) from Columbia University in NYC.<\/span>\u202f<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\"\"Eneken Laanes<\/strong><\/span> is Professor of Comparative Literature at Tallinn University, Estonia and the head of the group grant “Memory and Environment:\u00a0The Intersection of Fast and Slow Violence in Transnational European Literatures” (2025\u20132029).
