Power of Science and Power in Science
As Northern Irish astrophysics Professor Jocelyn Bell Burnell and French Professor Claudine Hermann visit Lithuania, we have a great pleasure to host them at the Institute on 23rd of November. Both Professors will discuss the power of science and its inner hierarchy. Assoc. professor Natalija Arlauskaite (Gender Studies Centre and our Institute) kindly agreed to moderate the event.
The discussion will touch the question of knowledge formation and what symbolic powers does science have for the society, how is it achieved and why we still have the gender based differences in advanced research as well as what should be done to eradicate gender related questions from the agenda of science and knowledge.
The event will take place at the Institute's main conference hall (room 402), at 6 p.m.
Prof. Jocelyn Bell Burnell is a Northern Irish astrophysicist who, as a postgraduate student, discovered the first radio pulsars with her thesis supervisor Antony Hewish, for which Hewish shared the Nobel Prize in Physics with Martin Ryle. More about the Professor here.
Prof. Claudine Hermann is Professor of Physics at Ecole Polytechnique, the most renowned French engineering school. She is alumna of Ecole Normale Supérieure de Jeunes Filles and her PhD (1976) was in solid state physics. She was the first woman ever appointed Professor at Ecole Polytechnique (1992). Since then, in parallel with her activities in physics, she has been studying the situation of women scientists in Western Europe and promoting science for girls, by papers and conferences, in France and abroad. At the European Union, she was a member of the expert group that produced the 'ETAN report' on women in academia in Western Europe (2000) ; she has been a French member of the Women and Science ('Helsinki') group at DG Research since 1999. A co-founder and the first president of the Femmes et Sciences (Women and Science) association, she is now its vice-president.
The discussion will be in English.
