Shlomo Avineri “The Global Challenges to Liberal Democracy”. Event will take place Monday, 24th of April, at 5:00 p.m., IIRPS VU (Vokiečių g. 10), room 402.

Shlomo Avineri is Professor of Political Science at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem and member of the Israel Academy of Sciences and Humanities. He served as Director-General of Israel's Ministry of Foreign Affairs in the government of Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin. He is currently Recurring Visiting Professor at the Central European University in Budapest. He has been recently elected to the Polish Academy of Arts and Sciences in Krakow.

In 1996 he received the Israel Prize, the country's highest civilian decoration. 

He held visiting appointments at Yale, Cornell, University of California, Oxford, Australian National University, Cardozo School of Law, as well at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace and the Brookings Institution (both in Washington DC), the Institute of World Economics and International Relation (IMEMO) in Moscow and Collegium Budapest.

After the fall of communism, he participated in democracy development programs and election monitoring in Hungary, Czechoslovakia, Ukraine, Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia, Serbia, Croatia, Montenegro, Kosovo, Georgia and Azerbaijan.

Among his books, which have been translated into many languages, are: The Social and Political Thought of Karl Marx, Hegel's Theory of the Modern State, Israel and the Palestinians, The Making of Modern Zionism, Moses Hess: Prophet of Communism and Zionism, Communitarianism and  Individualism (with Avner de-Shalit) and Herzl: Theodor Herzl and the Foundation of the Jewish State.

Discussion “How Could We Evaluate the Georgian-Lithuanian Relations In the Context of Today‘s Politics of the European Union” http://www.tspmi.vu.lt/en/events/discussion-how-could-we-evaluate-the-georgian-lithuanian-relations-in-the-context-of-todays-politics-of-the-european-union-998 Fri, 28 Apr 2017 00:01:00 +0300Institute of International Relations and Political Science at Vilnius University together with Embassy of Georgia in Vilnius, Lithuania and Georgian Institute of Politics in Tbilisi invite you all to a discussion titled “How Could We Evaluate the Georgian-Lithuanian Relations In the Context of Today‘s Politics of the European Union”. The event will take place in two countries, Georgia and Lithuania, at the same time thanks to online communication means. In Lithuania we will gather on 28 th of April 12:30PM (Lithuanian time) at the Institute, Vokiečių str. 10, room 402. Language of the event will be English.

Despite the fact that Georgian-Lithuanian relations have been very close over the past years when Lithuania strongly supported Georgia‘s efforts to become a part of the unified political and economic spheres of Europe, there‘s plenty of room for improvement of these bilateral relations. The topic of the discussion is especially important today, when Georgia‘s efforts were awarded and it has become closer to the EU, as well as Lithuania, after the implementation of visa free regime for Georgian citizens travelling to Schengen area countries. 

We will have honourable guests at the discussion: 

- H.E. Khatuna Salukvadze, the Ambassador of Georgia to Lithuania, 

- Assoc.prof. Margarita Seselgyte, deputy director for studies of the IIRPS VU and expert of security studines,

- and Arnoldas Pranckevičius, the Head of the European Commission representation in Vilnius, Lithuania.

Discussion will be moderated by Mariam Tsitskishvili, native of Georgia and student of Eastern European and Russian studies master program at IIRPS VU. 

The event will take place in two countries, Georgia and Lithuania, at the same time thanks to the means of online communication. The internet connection will let us keep in touch with the representatives of Georgian Institute of Politics in Tbilisi who will be watching live broadcast of the discussion. They will be able to ask questions to the panel members. The broadcast will be done on the Facebook account of the Eastern European and Russian Studies master program. This means that all followers of the page will be able to join the discussion.
